Šumadija is a tourist region with beautiful cities such as Oplenac, Kragujevac, Topola, Cacak and Smederevo. This area includes several historical monuments, spas and wine cellars. There are plenty possibilities of sightseeing: bukovička spa, Vrujci spa and rural tourism. Šumadija is also famous for its people hospitality.
Oplenac is located above Topola in Šumadia region, in the middle of Serbia. At the beginning of the XIX century, Oplenac was the core of the Serbian state. Besides, it was the place where Karadjordje Petrovic built his town and King Petar I Karadjordjevic chose for building his legacy. The beautiful Church and the mausoleum of the Karađorđević dynasty of St. George stand at the top of the city. The temple is decorated with 40 million pieces o class and 15,000 different shades of color. Twenty-two members of the Royal family were buried in the crypt. Moreover close to the house of King Peter there are also King’s villa and Queen Mary’s villa. Besides winegrower’s house dates back to 1911 and now it is a gallery with hosting several exhibitions, among which is also the legacy of famous Serbian painter Nikola Graovac.
Kragujevac is the largest city of Šumadija region and also the fourth largest city in Serbia after Belgrade. Kragujevac history is quite harassed, the worst episode was during the World War II, the October massacre of a lot of males and several of school children. Nowadays, Kragujevac is a quite modern city full of important buildings and institutions such as the old church of Descent of the Holy Spirit, the Old Parliament, the Prince Mihailo Konak, the National Museum and the Aquarium.
Topola is located 85 km from Belgrade, in the heart of Serbia, in Šumadije region, on the Oplenac hill. Topola has an important historical value since it is associated with Karadjordje, the leader of The First Serbian Insurrection against the Turks in 1804. Today is still possible to visit the endowment of King Petar I, which contains the church of Saint Djordje, Petar’s house, the brand-new Gallery (The house of vinogradar) and Karadjordje’s fortified town. These places have all a unique cultural historical value for Serbian people heritage. In addition Topola offers beautiful natural surrounding with clean air and track paths in the park of Oplenac. During spring, the fields are colorful and full of violets, while in October there is the famous Festival of grape and wine and interesting national folklore.
